Though Spencer, Indiana, is located within a nerve center of conservatism—and though it has a population of just over 2,000 residents—it’s long been a gathering place for the LGBTQ community. Established in 2007, the Spencer Pride Festival has grown to become much more than a singular annual event, and the town has come to represent a welcoming space for the rural gay community.
