Alex J. Semchuck is a lifelong Hoosier. Born in Indianapolis, then moving to Hammond when he was only months-old, he always calls Hammond his hometown. He achieved both of his degrees in Indiana: BA in Mass Communication from Purdue University & MA in Communication Studies from Indiana State University. He currently resides in Bloomington.
Alex has instructed communication courses at Indiana colleges & universities since 2007, including Indiana State University, Indiana University Northwest, and currently as Associate Professor of Communication at Ivy Tech Community College, Bloomington.
Alex launched Precision Independent Media in 2011. He has filmed dozens of weddings, special events, promotional and music videos for clients throughout Indiana and Chicagoland. Between 2011 and 2013, he produced his first feature-length effort, Stagnant Hope: Gary, Indiana. The film was released in May 2014.
Alex’s second film, The Slave Circle was released in 2018. The film dissects a worldwide network of direct sales multilevel marketing companies that function like a pyramid scheme, while advertising dreams of wealth and entrepreneurship. The popularity of the film spawned The Slave Circle Extra Takes web series.
His latest feature-length project, a documentary called From the North Side, is a memoir about growing up in Hammond. It was released in May 2021.
Alex’s main drive in creating films is sharing the truth – whether that means researching it or exposing it.
